Why Do Cats Stick Their Rear End in Their Owner«s Face? Expert Explanation

As often happens: you’re lying quietly, watching TV, and suddenly a cat walks by and sticks its rear end right in your face. This situation is familiar to almost every owner of a furry pet. So why do they do this?

It’s a greeting, not an insult

For cats, showing their rear end is a normal form of communication. Mother cats often lick and sniff their kittens to stimulate defecation and to distinguish the little ones by scent.

When two cats meet, one may raise its tail and expose its rear, allowing the other to sniff it—this is how animals exchange information and express trust.

By showing their rear to their owner, a cat demonstrates affection and confidence in feeling safe around them.

Cats Rely on Smells

These animals depend much more on scents than on vocal communication. Specialized glands near the anal opening release pheromone-rich fluids that carry chemical “messages” unique to each cat.

According to cat behavior expert Pam Johnson-Bennett, this is part of feline manners and an expression of trust. Body language helps cats convey things that we humans often overlook. A raised tail with an exposed rear means, “I like you.”

Should You Be Concerned?

In most cases, this is perfectly normal behavior. However, if a cat is licking itself excessively or has a strong unpleasant odor, it may indicate problems with the anal glands. In such cases, it’s worth consulting a veterinarian.
