Why do we whitewash tree trunks in spring?

Without any particular reason.

At the end of the winter season, unpainted seedlings and young trunks, whose bark is not yet covered with a dead cork layer, can get sunburned due to the reflection of sunlight from the snow. In addition, autumn whitewashing protects young trees from mice and voles, which can damage the bark in winter when food supplies are depleted.
