What is Remembered in the Church on June 19, 2026
Ilarion lived in the 8th century; he was born into a pious Christian family. From early childhood, he studied scripture and at the age of 20 dedicated himself to the Lord.
In the Dalmatian monastery, he took the schema and became a disciple of Gregory Decapolite. When his teacher died, he managed the monastery for 8 years. However, in 813, when Emperor Leo the Armenian came to power and began to implement the iconoclastic heresy, Ilarion sharply opposed it, for which he paid dearly — he was imprisoned and starved.
He was tortured many times, but he endured it all. When the emperor was killed by his own soldiers, he was temporarily released, but then imprisoned again. For all his sufferings, he was rewarded — he was able to see angels carrying the soul of Theodore Studite to heaven, who also suffered due to iconoclasm. At the end of his life, Empress Theodora granted him freedom, and he returned to the Dalmatian monastery, became the abbot again, and peacefully passed away there.
