Many parishioners first light a candle from the lamp and then drip wax into the candlestick to prevent it from falling. However, it turns out that this is not recommended.
“In every church, it is necessary to observe traditions. After all, when you come to someone else's home, you adhere to certain rules,” explains Priest Ivan Dolgov. “As for the lamp, if there are no burning candles nearby, you can take fire from it. This is not prohibited and is not considered a sin. However, it is requested not to do this to avoid wax drips on the lamp and accidental spills of the oil contained in it.
Church staff often ask parishioners not to drip wax into church candlesticks. This complicates their cleaning, as it has to be done manually. It is better to light the candle and bring it with the back side to another burning candle: it will melt slightly, and it will be much easier to place it.”
