Handwriting: Why It Matters to Us

Do you constantly type on a computer and not remember the last time you wrote by hand? Find out why you shouldn't completely abandon handwriting and how it can be beneficial for your brain.

Firstly, when writing by hand, the part of the brain responsible for psychomotor functions is activated. We do not just perceive letters as symbols, but also engage motor activity, which contributes to better information retention. Unlike typing on a computer, where actions occur automatically and without much thought about which key to press, handwriting requires greater involvement.

Moreover, handwriting activates the right hemisphere, which is responsible for imaginative thinking, artistic perception, and emotions, as opposed to logical thinking, which is controlled by the left hemisphere. This means that your texts become more emotional and creative.

With handwriting, there are no autocorrections. No one but you monitors the correctness of your spelling. If you make a mistake, you have to cross it out and write it correctly next to it. This helps to improve your literacy level.

BY THE WAY

The development of fine motor skills occurs not only during writing. For example, by sorting grains or engaging in embroidery, you also stimulate this process. In such moments, the interaction of the hemispheres takes place, which contributes to the better development of higher mental functions. This is an excellent prevention of Alzheimer's disease, as you maintain attention and memory at a high level.
