I was surprised to learn that the Netherlands is not the homeland of tulips. Is this true?
Yes.
"The homeland of tulips is the mountainous and steppe regions of Central Asia (specifically, the territory of modern Kazakhstan, the Tian Shan mountain system)," said botanist Vladimir LEBEDKO. "Later, tulips began to be cultivated in the Ottoman Empire (Turkey), from where they made their way to Europe in the 16th century, including the Netherlands. And now this country is the largest supplier of tulip seeds and bulbs.
There are also tulip fields in the Netherlands, which have gained worldwide fame for their scale and beauty."
