Causes of Cabbage Rot

Last year, friends who visited me at my summer house noticed that my white cabbage was affected by black leg. I doubt this. I would like to understand the signs of the disease and ways to combat it.

Black leg is a disease that affects young plants of white cabbage and other cabbage crops. The root neck shows thinning and darkening, and constrictions appear. As a result, the plants begin to rot and can be easily pulled out of the soil. Crops grown in greenhouses and plastic greenhouses are particularly susceptible to this disease. High soil and air humidity, dense plantings, poor ventilation, and sharp temperature fluctuations contribute to the spread of the disease. The pathogen can persist in plant residues and soil.

To prevent the recurrence of the disease, it is essential to disinfect greenhouses and hotbeds, as well as to loosen the soil. It is recommended to add clean river sand around the plants in a layer of 1-2 cm. Spraying with Trichodermin, Rizoplan, or a horsetail infusion (20 g per 1 liter of water) helps to control the development of the disease. Upon detecting infected plants, they should be immediately removed, and the affected areas treated with a 1% solution of Bordeaux mixture or a 3-5% solution of potassium permanganate (1 liter per 1 m²).
