Can You Eat Cactus?

Yes.

The cactus Opuntia ficus-indica is widely found in the arid regions of the planet — a plant that is spiny on the outside and juicy and sweet on the inside. It is commonly known as the prickly pear, Indian fig, sabra, and by many other names.

The prickly pear has Mexican roots. According to scientists, it was first cultivated and consumed about 9,000 years ago. Although this plant bears fruit abundantly, it is not recommended to harvest the crop with bare hands. The fruits are covered with soft, thin, translucent spines that can cause pain when they penetrate the skin and are difficult to remove. Many who see this cactus for the first time and do not notice the spines try the bright fruit — and immediately feel the “sharp sensations.” However, with caution, Native Americans, both in ancient times and today, eat the flesh of the prickly pear, while the seeds are roasted and ground to prepare soups. The stems are consumed fresh and pickled, and less often dried.

The cactus was introduced to Europe and the Middle East in the 16th century — sailors took its leaves with them as a remedy against scurvy. The plant began to be specially cultivated in desert regions. Currently, the prickly pear is grown in many countries; for example, there are extensive plantations in the Negev Desert in Israel. It prefers sunny locations and is resistant to sharp temperature fluctuations.

The fruits of this plant are actively used in cooking, the production of alcoholic beverages, and medical preparations. Juice and pulp are added to candies and ice cream.
