Recovery Time After Alcohol Poisoning

How long does alcohol poisoning last? This is explained by psychotherapist and psychiatrist-addiction specialist Alexander Polikarpov.

What Enhances the Effect of Alcohol Intoxication?

First of all, it depends on the volume and quality of the alcohol consumed.

Secondly, the speed of consumption is important. If a lot of alcohol is consumed in a short period of time, the degree of intoxication increases. However, if alcohol is consumed in small portions with breaks, intoxication will be less pronounced but will last longer.

It is also worth considering what foods are consumed with alcohol. Desserts and carbonated drinks promote faster absorption of alcohol, which enhances intoxication. To slow down this process, it is recommended to snack on meat, potatoes, and fatty foods. Additionally, alcohol absorption increases if a person is hungry: intoxication can occur within just 40 minutes.

No less important are individual characteristics, including genetic factors. They affect the functioning of two enzymes. The first enzyme converts ethanol into acetaldehyde (a toxic substance that causes hangover symptoms). The second enzyme converts acetaldehyde into acetic acid, which is then processed into water and carbon dioxide (at this stage, the symptoms of intoxication disappear). These enzymes work with varying efficiency and speed in different people. For example, if the first enzyme is active while the second is less effective, a hangover can occur quickly and be quite pronounced even after small amounts of alcohol.

How Long Does Intoxication Last?

On average, alcohol intoxication after consuming a bottle of wine lasts about a day and is accompanied by headaches, nausea, and vomiting, as well as gastrointestinal disturbances.

In more severe cases, there may be dysfunction of internal organs, seizures, and even alcohol coma.

What to Do?

If the symptoms of intoxication are mild, it is sufficient to rest in bed for one to two days and drink plenty of clean water. Broths and light foods are also beneficial. If nausea occurs, trying to drink through a straw may help.

For quick and effective relief from the effects of intoxication, intravenous drips can be used. Infusion therapy has long been applied not only in intensive care units.

Special solutions are selected for this purpose, which alleviate the condition, accelerate the elimination of alcohol breakdown products, and restore the normal functioning of internal organs. Such drips are often administered at home; however, their installation and composition should be determined by a doctor, as only a specialist can adequately assess the state of the body and its readiness for therapy.
