How to Properly Grow Fennel?

Many gardeners are unaware of perennial fennel, which leads to its absence in garden plots.

Agronomist Svetlana Sidorova shares her knowledge.

Fennel is a source of many vitamins, especially vitamin C, rutin, and carotene. The uniqueness of this plant lies in the fact that all its parts are used in cooking: the swollen bases of the petioles, stems, shoots, roots, and seeds. I add fennel to fish, meat, and vegetable dishes, which gives them a unique flavor, improves appetite, and boosts immunity. Adding fennel to pickled vegetables or mushrooms makes the taste more refined.

I have been growing fennel for many years and have noticed that it prefers sunny spots with moist and loose soil. It responds well to leafy soil and well-rotted compost. I leave the rows spaced 45 cm apart. I sow the seeds at a depth of 2 cm, after disinfecting them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 2 hours. During the growing season, I cultivate the rows three times and remove weeds. For novice gardeners, fennel, especially the shoots, can become tough and lose flavor, which indicates that they have forgotten to mound the plants.
