Causes of Sudden Eyelid Twitching and Ways to Combat It

Sometimes eyelid twitching can start without an obvious reason! But what lies behind this phenomenon? How dangerous is it? Perhaps it is worth consulting a specialist?

Eyelid twitching, also known as eye tic, is an involuntary spasm caused by the contraction of muscles in the eyelid area. Although this subtle movement usually passes within a few minutes, it can cause significant irritation. So why does the eye start twitching? There are several factors.

Stress

The eye tic most commonly occurs due to fatigue and stress. After a long day at work spent in front of a computer, your eyes try to relieve the accumulated tension. In such cases, it is important to take breaks more often and pay attention to getting enough sleep.

Allergy

In addition to itching, tearing, and swelling, allergic reactions can manifest through eyelid twitching. This occurs due to the presence of histamine in the tear film, which causes the tissues to twitch, itch, and swell.

Computer Use

Excessive time spent on smartphones, computers, or other digital devices can cause eye strain, which in turn can lead to a nervous tic. To reduce eye fatigue, it is recommended to follow the “20-20-20 rule.” This means that every 20 minutes, you should look away from the screen and focus on an object that is at least 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds.

Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are most commonly encountered by adults (over 50 years old) who spend a lot of time on computers and use contact lenses. In such cases, it is better to consult a doctor to find suitable eye drops.

If the nervous tic bothers you for too long, be sure to see a doctor.
