What is paskon and what is it used for?

This was the term used for male hemp plants.

In a historical context, hemp, known to humanity long before the advent of flax, was grown everywhere for the production of paskon, or hempen, fabric. This name is associated with male plants, from which a finer yet very strong fiber was made. Male plants bloom and mature several weeks earlier, making their harvest easier.

At the end of summer, female plants were harvested, from the seeds of which edible oil was obtained, as well as coarser fibers—hemp, which was mainly used for making ropes and cords, and less frequently for fabric production. Hemp was in high demand in shipbuilding, as it is the only natural fiber that does not deteriorate under the influence of seawater.

In the modern world, hemp is most often perceived as a plant with narcotic properties. In most countries, its plantations are under strict control by government authorities, and private crops are often destroyed.
