Can valerian be cultivated in the garden?

Medicinal valerian is a sought-after plant, the infusions of which are actively used in medicine.

This perennial plant is planted in the fall, using a rate of 0.7-0.8 g/m² at a depth of 1.5 cm. It is sown in rows with a distance of 45 cm between them. Soil preparation is carried out similarly to that for carrots or other vegetables.

Valerian in natural conditions prefers peaty soils, so if your soil is not sufficiently nutritious, it is recommended to add peat, manure, or compost (4 kg/m² each) and 'ammophos' in the amount of 20-30 g/m². In the case of very poor soil, the dose should be tripled. The roots are harvested in the 2nd or 3rd year about a week before the onset of stable frosts.

To increase yield, it is useful to periodically carry out topping — cutting the flower shoots to a height of 5-10 cm. After harvesting the roots, the plantation should be reseeded, however, it is not recommended to grow medicinal herbs of the same species in one place for more than 6-8 years.
