Why Do People Prefer Phone Calls to Video Calls?

Personal communication is undoubtedly the best option, but when comparing phone calls and video conferences, the former proves to be more comfortable. What is the reason?

Conferences on platforms like Zoom can certainly serve as a worthy substitute for in-person meetings; however, for communicating with friends, this format proves to be less convenient than simple phone calls.

A recent study demonstrated that communication through calls, video calls, text messages, or voice notes, while useful supplements to in-person meetings, cannot compare in significance. It was found that the more complex the technology, the less it satisfies our communication needs.

Researchers noted that a regular phone call helps reduce stress, loneliness, and difficulties in social interactions, whereas video calls can have the opposite effect. This may be related to the fact that during a phone conversation, we feel less self-conscious and can communicate without worrying about our appearance and facial expressions.

Furthermore, scientists discovered that social media posts, comments, and information sharing cause the most stress among all forms of communication. Nevertheless, researchers suggest that in the future, the time spent in front of screens will only increase. Scientists warn against the "consent to a two-dimensional life" and urge people to spend more time away from their device screens.
