Can You Eat Cactus?

Yes.

The cactus Opuntia ficus-indica is widely distributed in the arid regions of the planet — a plant with a spiny exterior but juicy and sweet inside. It is commonly known as the prickly pear, Indian fig, sabra, and many other names.

The prickly pear originates from Mexico. Scientists believe that people began to cultivate and consume it about 9,000 years ago. This plant bears fruit abundantly, but harvesting should be done with caution. The fruits are covered with soft, translucent spines that can cause pain upon contact with the skin and are difficult to remove. Many, seeing this cactus for the first time and not noticing the spines, try the bright fruit and immediately feel the 'sharp sensations.' Nevertheless, with caution, Native Americans both in ancient times and today enjoy the flesh of the prickly pear, while the seeds are roasted and ground to make soups. The stems are consumed both fresh and pickled, and less frequently dried.

The cactus was brought to Europe and the Middle East in the 16th century — sailors took its leaves with them as a remedy for scurvy. The plant began to be specifically cultivated in desert areas. Currently, the prickly pear is grown in many countries; for example, there are extensive plantations of this cactus in the Negev desert of Israel. It prefers sunny locations and is resistant to significant temperature fluctuations.

The fruits of this plant are actively used in cooking, the production of alcoholic beverages, and medical preparations. The juice and pulp are added to candies and ice cream.
