Is it permissible to tie a child's mouth and nose with a scarf in the frost?

I often see mothers tying their child's mouth and nose with a scarf in the frost. Is this permissible?

No, it is absolutely not permissible to tie a child's mouth and nose with a scarf. Pediatrician Maria Revnova explains: “If a child is actively moving, they need to breathe through their nose. Under the scarf, moist air forms, which then cools down, and the child inhales it. This significantly increases the risk of catching a cold. This rule also applies to adults.”

It should be noted that pediatricians generally do not recommend taking children under one year old outside when the temperature is below -10°C, and for children aged 1 to 3 years — when the temperature drops below -15°C. The duration of winter walks depends not only on the air temperature but also on the wind strength. The stronger the wind, the shorter the walk should be. Strong winds cause tearing, chapping of the face, and contribute to the child's faster cooling.
