Gregory's Day: What to Do on February 7 for Health and Luck

On February 7, Orthodox churches honor Saint Gregory the Theologian, who holds an important place in the history of Christianity. His legacy includes nearly 800 letters and sermons addressed to the faithful. In the folk calendar, this day is called Gregory's Day. In the past, people attached special importance to words, knowing that they possess extraordinary power.

On February 7, Orthodox churches hold services mentioning the name of Gregory the Theologian. This great church figure, philosopher, poet, and prose writer was born into a family of saints who prayed to the Lord for his arrival.

His parents, who had long been considered childless, made a vow to Jesus Christ that if they were granted a child, he would dedicate his life to serving God. And so it happened. Gregory the Theologian's entire life was devoted to religion and to the people whom he considered the greatest miracle on earth.

Folk Calendar: Gregory's Day

Our ancestors knew that Gregory's Day is a holiday that should be celebrated with family. On this day, it is customary to remember the good deeds done by people and to thank those who came to help, as well as to help others themselves.

It was believed that the words spoken on Gregory's Day have special magical power. Therefore, people paid attention to every word spoken.

Merchants had their own superstition. On Gregory's Day, they would turn to healers to "enchant" sugar for good luck. These pieces were carried in pockets, believing that they would contribute to successful trade.

Gregory's Day: Folk Omens

The day before was celebrated as Aksinya's Day, also known as Half-Winter, which was considered the midpoint of winter. Gregory's Day was seen as a turn towards spring. "Aksinya hurries Gregory so that he does not miss spring, planting the sun on the roofs," people would say.

The older generations knew: the first half of Gregory's Day would hint at what to expect from winter going forward. If it snows on February 7 (January 25 in the old style), the next winter will come later than usual.

People listened carefully to the tits. If the birds made loud sounds, it meant that the frosts had not yet retreated, and new challenges from the cold were expected ahead.

What Not to Do on Gregory's Day

The main prohibitions of Gregory's Day are also related to words. On this day, one should not offend others even by hints. On Gregory's Day, it is forbidden to:

Argue, quarrel, or clarify relationships — this will lead to mental and physical ailments.
Boast about good deeds — this will lead to problems in the family.
Share plans, even with close people. They may not come true.
Cut nails — this may shorten life.
Compliment women — they may lose their attractiveness.

Our ancestors believed that men should not return home empty-handed on Gregory's Day. It is necessary to bring something, otherwise, one might forget about money for a long time.
