He has been banned from entering Latvia, Ukraine, and Canada.
What is known about the current life of the famous actor, how he fought with addiction and depression?
Kharatyan has repeatedly faced alcohol addiction throughout his career. It began during the filming of the movie "Green Van." After the resounding success of "Gardemarines," his alcohol problems worsened. As a result, he missed auditions twice for the role of young Edmond Dantès in "The Count of Monte Cristo," which was ultimately played by Evgeny Dvorzhetsky. Kharatyan spoke about his alcohol problems and the depression he experienced at the age of 37 on the show "He and She" on TVC.
"I didn’t want to wake up. I understood that it was morning. And I... would again cover myself with a blanket and say, 'I don’t want to, I don’t want this life.' I didn’t want anything at all, except to close myself off and somehow fall asleep. But this is not death. This is complete detachment from the outside world. I reached the edge several times. I was really not just reaching it through depression, but simply through alcohol," Kharatyan recalled.
Kharatyan noted that he openly shares his problems to show how one can cope with painful addictions. He also emphasizes that he considers his recovery a stroke of luck: "I was just lucky. Seriously. I’ve seen few people who reached such an edge. Most of them are simply no longer here. There’s no Andrey Krasko, who simply said to himself, 'But I will still be. I will be, I like it. Whatever my term will be, so be it. When the time comes, it will be all.' And he left quite early."
Dmitry Kharatyan was born on January 21, 1960, in the city of Almalyk. He graduated from the M. S. Shchepkin Higher Theatre School. In his career, Kharatyan starred in films such as "The Prank," "Photographs on the Wall," "Two Poodles," "Speed," "Bus Driver," "The Mysterious Prisoner," "Gardemarines, Forward!", "Branch," "Treasure," "And the Devil with Us," "The Groom from Miami," "Queen Margot," "Resort Romance," "Another Life," "The Bat," "My Prince," "Oncoming Lane," "The Return of the Musketeers," "The Lighthouse Keeper," "Green Van," and many others. In 2025, two films featuring Kharatyan were released: "Karuzza" and "VIA 'Vasilki.'"
On January 7, 2023, amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he was included in Ukraine's sanctions list for his "role in Russian propaganda." Earlier, Latvia, for supporting the attack on Ukraine, banned Kharatyan from entering the country indefinitely as a person "supporting the Kremlin regime." On July 20, 2023, he was included in Canada's sanctions list against "individuals using their art to promote Russia's invasion of Ukraine."
