How Do Aphrodisiacs Work?

Differently.

Aphrodisiacs often possess almost magical properties that promote sexual attraction and increase sexual activity. It is not surprising that the name of these substances, promising pleasure in romantic endeavors, comes from the name of the goddess of love, Aphrodite. In fact, some of them… have no effect at all and only create a psychological effect.

For example, caviar and powdered rhinoceros horn are considered aphrodisiacs, but the myth surrounding them is based on the ancient belief that the properties of food (in this case, fertility) are transferred to those who consume it. The same situation applies to oysters: since these mollusks are hermaphrodites, they are believed to possess double sexual energy.

Other “miraculous remedies” contain vitamins A and E, as well as tonic components — ginseng, eleutherococcus, succinic acid, and others. They enhance overall tone, accelerate metabolism, awaken interest in life, and, consequently, in its sexual aspect.

Aphrodisiacs are divided into plant and animal categories. The former includes extracts from tropical trees such as muira puama, damiana, guarana, yohimbe, as well as more familiar items like almonds, bananas, dates, onions, and others. The latter includes seafood, goat milk, cheeses, quail and chicken eggs, and more.

From the animal world, substances that are part of many “seductive” perfume compositions are used: musk, amber, civet, beaver castoreum. They affect the nervous system and activate natural amino acids that promote the dilation of blood vessels and increased blood flow to the genital organs. Moreover, the well-known “Spanish fly,” famous due to the Marquis de Sade, contains the toxin cantharidin, which does indeed affect potency by irritating the inner walls of the urethra, but it also causes inflammation of the urogenital tract and can lead to disability.

The past century has been a time of inventions in the field of synthetic psychostimulants that promote a state of sexual arousal. Under the influence of such drugs, awakened libido focuses on a close person, creating an artificial feeling of love. This state lasts for several hours; however, such drugs almost completely suppress a person's natural sexual activity.
