What Happens If You Eat Only Potatoes?

Throughout 2016, Australian Andrew Taylor consumed only potatoes. Initially, he was overweight, but after losing 53 kilograms in a year, he felt great. However, is it possible to exist on one product for a lifetime?

There is not a single dietitian, scientist, or doctor who would recommend a mono-diet as an ideal long-term solution. For normal functioning, our body requires 20 amino acids, of which nine are essential (meaning we cannot synthesize them and must obtain them from food). Additionally, minerals and vitamins are necessary. Unfortunately, there is no single product that can fully meet all the body's needs. However, there are products that can be 'optimal' in conditions of disaster or famine. Potatoes are one such product, but with several caveats.

White potatoes contain all the essential amino acids needed for protein synthesis, cell repair, and disease fighting. By consuming just five potatoes a day, one can meet the daily requirement for these substances. However, if you eat only potatoes, you will eventually face a deficiency of vitamins and minerals. In this case, you can add sweet potatoes to your diet, which will help provide the necessary daily dose of vitamins A, C, and E.

Nevertheless, the amount of sweet potato you will have to eat will be enormous. It is also important to remember that, in addition to vitamins and amino acids, the body needs minerals. For example, to meet the daily calcium requirement, you would need to eat 34 sweet potatoes and 84 potatoes!

It is also worth noting that potatoes can be not only beneficial but also harmful. They are high in carbohydrates, which can cause sharp spikes in blood sugar levels, putting a strain on the insulin system. According to numerous studies, people who frequently consume potatoes are more likely to suffer from diabetes and obesity.

So how did Andrew Taylor manage to lose weight? The fact is that he did not eat an enormous amount of potatoes to maintain all the vitamins in his body. He took vitamin supplements and sometimes added soy milk to his potatoes. His experiment was conducted under strict medical supervision, so replicating it in real life is not only difficult but also dangerous! If you decide to start a diet, always remember that the body needs variety.
