Gardener's Calendar for January 16: Seedling Feeding

It is believed that the Waning Moon in Capricorn is a favorable time for feeding and fertilizing the soil. Agronomist Andrey Tumanov provides key recommendations on how not to harm the plants.

— Beginner gardeners need to understand a simple idea: plant nutrition is fundamentally different from human nutrition. Do not try to feed seedlings "on a schedule" three times a day — plants rarely need daily or even weekly feedings.

— Organic materials, such as manure and compost infusions, provide a very variable nutrient composition. The nitrogen content and other elements can vary by orders of magnitude depending on the raw materials and storage conditions, so it is impossible to determine the exact dose by eye. Due to such unpredictability, it is easy to make a mistake: either underfeed or, more commonly, overfeed the seedlings, especially those that are sensitive in the early stages of growth. Overfeeding manifests as leaf burns, slowed development, and a general decline in plant health.

— To reduce risks, use balanced complex fertilizers, where the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients is calculated by the manufacturer. Liquid complexes are the most convenient: they dissolve well and have a measuring cap for precise dosing.

— Choose registered and labeled products with specified composition and recommendations; avoid "miracle products" without transparent information about composition and certification. Dilute concentrates strictly according to the instructions and do not increase the dose "just in case."

— For seedlings, it is wise to start with reduced rates and adjust feedings based on the plants' reactions. Before applying fertilizer, first moisten the soil with plain water and do not pour concentrate on dry roots. Do not feed plants that are under stress or sick — they need rehabilitation first.

— If there are doubts about the soil composition, conduct a soil analysis: pH and salinity balance indicators will help correctly select a nutrition program.

— Store fertilizers in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place, observe expiration dates and safety rules, and work in gloves.

— The main thing is to observe the plants and make adjustments based on their actual condition; a cautious, scientifically grounded approach will yield healthier seedlings and better harvests than frequent "guesswork" feedings.
