Mistakes When Buying Seeds for Your Summer House: Agronomist's Advice

During the January holidays, summer residents are actively preparing for the new season, and one of the main purchases becomes seeds. However, as with any shopping, it is important to avoid common mistakes that even experienced gardeners can make. What specific mistakes should be taken into account?

Opinion of agronomist Petr Sinkovsky:

— Despite all the advantages of online stores, I would not recommend purchasing all seeds online. The most important crops for you, favorite varieties, or those that you plan to store for the future are best bought in person. This will allow you to assess the quality of the packaging and other important aspects before payment. It is better to order something less significant, experimental online, that is, what you want to try in your garden or flowerbed for the first time.

Years of experience show that when buying seeds, you should focus on varieties that are adapted to your region. The further north your summer house is located, the more strictly you should adhere to this principle: “southerners” can afford experiments, but you are unlikely to succeed. Of course, you can try, but this may result in losses in yield and finances. Therefore, do not forget the principle: “what grows where it was born.”

Do not succumb to the temptation of low prices. While a high price does not always guarantee quality, a price that is too low should raise suspicion: the seller is likely trying to get rid of unsellable goods.

The shelf life of seeds also matters: pay close attention to this indicator and do not hesitate to ask for information. Otherwise, you risk receiving seeds that will no longer germinate.

The place of purchase is also important: seeds should not be bought on the roadside or from an elderly woman sitting at the entrance to a store. Despite the sympathy for such sellers, it is better to choose verified points of sale.

And, of course, adhere to the principle: do not put all your eggs in one basket. Let about thirty percent of your seeds be coated, that is, in special protective shells — this will help create a good foundation when sowing in open ground.

It is also not advisable to stock up on seeds for several years ahead. It is much wiser to focus on the needs of only one upcoming season.
