Dust mites are microscopic creatures (ranging from 0.5 to 0.1 mm) that inhabit household dust and feed on particles of human and animal skin. Their presence can negatively affect health.
This was reported by allergist-immunologist Irina Estrina.
The appearance of dust mites in a home does not depend on the cleanliness of the owners. These microscopic insects can be present even in small amounts of dust. One gram of household dust can contain from 2,000 to 10,000 of these parasites. Mites form colonies, and the largest number is observed inside pillows, blankets, upholstered furniture, curtains, as well as in places with a lot of items — on bookshelves and in closets with clothes. They prefer warm and humid environments.
What are the risks?
Unlike forest ticks, dust mites cannot bite humans. However, their waste products, such as feces and chitin particles, pose a danger. They become airborne and can remain in the room for up to 30 minutes. Inhaling these particles can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Allergy to dust mites is one of the main causes of allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and bronchial asthma. This type of allergy is found in 50% of patients with such diagnoses.
How to recognize an allergy to mites?
The main sign of a dust mite allergy is its persistence regardless of the season. Symptoms include sneezing, throat irritation, itching and tearing of the eyes, coughing, as well as possible skin manifestations such as dryness, flaking, itching, and redness. For accurate diagnosis, it is necessary to consult an allergist. Based on the medical history, examination, and clinical manifestations, the specialist may suspect an allergy and, if necessary, prescribe tests to determine sensitivity to allergens.
How to protect yourself from dust mites?
To create unfavorable conditions for mites, it is necessary to reduce their numbers in the home. It is recommended to use hypoallergenic textiles, wash and iron bed linens at least once a week, regularly conduct wet cleaning, and ventilate rooms. It is advisable to avoid carpets and prevent the accumulation of unnecessary items in the house.
