Sneezing and Tears: Nine Most Allergenic Houseplants

Allergy is a problem that can affect people of all ages. It can occur suddenly: a scent that was pleasant yesterday may cause sneezing, tears, or even more serious consequences today. The source of allergies can be not only pets but also plants. Which of them pose the greatest danger to people with allergies?

Opinion of landscape designer Olga Voronova:

— The following decorative houseplants are most well-known as strong allergens:

geranium
ferns
philodendron
dieffenbachia
alocasia
cyclamen
jade plant

It is important to remember that the presence or absence of an allergic reaction to a specific plant is an individual characteristic. However, intolerance is more frequently observed with the listed plants.

This is especially true for geraniums and ferns. The essential oils in geranium leaves are the main allergens that can cause headaches, sometimes skin rashes, and in rare cases, suffocation. Ferns, in turn, release fine spores that can spread throughout the room and cause breathing problems, including severe coughing.

If you are forcing flowers in winter, keep in mind that strong allergic reactions can be triggered by:

lilies
hyacinths

Here, the intense fragrances can be unsuitable for everyone. While home orchids and tulips rarely cause allergies. The conclusion is obvious: when choosing houseplants, consider not only your preferences but also the possible reactions of everyone living with you. In case of an allergy to certain plants, it is better to replace them with hypoallergenic ones, of which there are plenty to satisfy even the most refined tastes.
