More Snow — More Harvest: Tips for Gardeners

Snow is a true treasure for gardeners. In recent years, due to climate changes, vegetable plants suffer from a lack of moisture in the soil during the summer. Therefore, it is important to accumulate as much snow as possible in winter on your plot.

There is a particular need for snow for winter-planted onions, garlic, and perennial crops such as marjoram, catnip, rhubarb, tarragon, and others. In winter, do not forget to regularly visit your plot to check how these plants are doing and whether there is enough snow on them.

To retain snow if it has fallen on your plot, scatter fir branches, brushwood, or set up special shields on the beds. Don’t forget to shake the snow off fruit trees after heavy snowfall. For large trees, it is convenient to use poles wrapped in burlap to avoid damaging the bark.

Also, pay attention to the presence of mouse tracks in the snow. If you notice them, compact the snow in those areas to disrupt the mouse tunnels and prevent damage. Sometimes, after thaws, a dense crust forms on the snow — ice, which hinders air access. It needs to be broken to prevent the plants from suffocating.
