Hydrogen Peroxide: Can It Be Used for Disease Prevention and How Is It Used in the Kitchen

This colorless and odorless liquid has many amazing properties, including the ability to treat various diseases. But what are its real applications?

The molecular formula of hydrogen peroxide, or peroxide, is similar to that of water — H2O2. During chemical reactions, one free radical — monovalent oxygen — is released and destroys everything in its path. This explains the "active" behavior of this substance.

Hydrogen peroxide has antibacterial and cleansing properties, which is why it is used for treating wounds and abrasions. However, recent studies have shown that hydrogen peroxide destroys not only pathogenic bacteria but also the skin cells surrounding the wound. This can slow down the healing process, so it is better to use less aggressive agents.

A hydrogen peroxide solution can be used to treat fruits, vegetables, and other products for disinfection, but they must be thoroughly rinsed with water after treatment. A small amount of the solution can be added to dishwashing liquid, which will enhance its effectiveness in cleaning plates and utensils. Thanks to the ability of hydrogen peroxide to deliver oxygen, you can revive your houseplants — simply wipe their leaves with a damp sponge soaked in water with added peroxide.

Moreover, H2O2 has oxidative properties and is used for bleaching not only paper and fabrics but also some food products, such as wheat flour, pistachios, and various oils. Thus, hydrogen peroxide can effectively remove stains from white tablecloths, towels, aprons, and chef's jackets.

To date, hydrogen peroxide is not an approved or registered food additive, so its internal use, even in the form of a weak solution, is not recommended. However, in 2002, Professor Ivan Pavlovich Neumyvakin published an article in which he called hydrogen peroxide a panacea for many diseases and suggested using it to treat cardiovascular and oncological diseases, asthma, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, arthritis, and even AIDS. Professor Neumyvakin stated: “H2O2, interacting with the human blood enzyme — catalase, transforms into atomic oxygen, which destroys everything pathological and foreign to the body, normalizes redox processes, and stimulates the immune system. Atomic oxygen also oxidizes fats deposited on the walls of arteries, preventing atherosclerosis.”

The professor recommended taking a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution on an empty stomach, starting with 2-3 drops in a spoonful of water three times a day. Nevertheless, his theory still lacks scientific confirmation and is not approved by official medicine, attracting only supporters of folk and alternative treatments.
