There are many recommendations that help alleviate hangover symptoms. Psychiatrist-narcologist Daniil Petrov talked about the most dangerous of them.
Daniil Petrov is convinced that the only way to cope with a hangover is time, which the body needs to recover on its own after intoxication. Everyone decides whether to try to alleviate the symptoms, but the doctor warns that some methods are not only ineffective but can also cause serious harm to health.
“Physical exertion, jogging, working outdoors, saunas, and any other ways to 'sweat it out' are extremely harmful during a hangover. The body is already suffering from dehydration, and additional fluid loss can lead to thickening of the blood and disruptions in the functioning of the heart and other organs,” warns Daniil Petrov.
He also advises against rushing to take medications. Often, people, eager to get rid of headaches, take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which turns out to be ineffective. These medications can thicken the blood and contribute to the formation of blood clots.
Daniil Petrov does not recommend a heavy, fatty breakfast either. According to him, the first meal after consuming a large amount of alcohol should be light, nutritious, and rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals that will help restore nutrient reserves in the body more quickly.
“Under no circumstances should you consume drinks that stimulate the central nervous system to alleviate a hangover. Energy drinks, coffee, or strong tea worsen dehydration and increase heart rate, which is dangerous at this moment. It is best to drink still mineral water, as well as natural juices, fruit drinks, kefir, or brine. A new dose of alcohol to relieve symptoms of poisoning can lead to alcohol dependence,” says Dr. Petrov.
An additional portion of alcohol may provide temporary relief, but then it will worsen the feeling of malaise, leading to a desire to improve the condition again. This can create a vicious cycle and lead to binge drinking and then to addiction.
