Is it correct to retain snow in winter on a summer cottage plot, compact it, and thus accumulate moisture for the beds?
Agronomist and summer resident Alexander KHOROBROVETS shares his experience:
- In light soils, water quickly drains into deeper layers, leading to moisture deficiency in plants during the summer period. The situation worsens if there is no nearby water source. What should be done in such cases? We often make the mistake of forgetting that valuable moisture can be accumulated in winter. Snow retention, snow accumulation, snow compaction, and the retention of meltwater are effective methods for preserving moisture in areas without water bodies.
Moreover, snow retention helps reduce soil cooling in winter and increases moisture reserves in the top meter of soil by 50 mm or more. Specialists have established that a dense snow cover can raise soil temperature by 3-5°C.
Don’t miss the opportunity in winter, when snow falls, to visit your plot: spread pine branches in places where the wind usually blows away the snow, and compact it on the beds with perennials and winter garlic.
