Every New Year, we traditionally visit my husband's parents. However, after such visits, I feel like a squeezed lemon, and I genuinely feel sorry for my husband. His father takes all the attention, repeatedly telling stories from his childhood, about illnesses and work. My husband is humiliated: “At your age, I...” — and a praise odyssey begins about how great he is, while the son... How can I convince my husband to spend New Year's Eve together at home?
This question is answered by psychologist Jadwiga Monich:
- Just tell your husband: “I love you so much that I want to spend this wonderful holiday only with you.” The behavior of your husband’s father can be explained by his egocentrism or toxicity: such people only care about themselves and are only interested in their own affairs.
Others for them are merely an opportunity to enhance their own significance.
Therefore, they have a constant desire to humiliate those around them and enjoy their suffering. Conclusion: it is better to politely avoid close contact with such people.
