On December 26, 2023, the Church commemorates the martyrs Eustratius, Eugene, Axentius, Orest, and Mardarius, who suffered for their faith in the 4th century. This day was called Eustratus, and the weather for January was predicted based on it: “If Eustratus rejoices in the sun, then January will be clear and frosty.”
Who are the martyrs Eustratius, Axentius, Eugene, Mardarius, and Orest?
The martyrs became victims of persecution for their faith under Emperor Diocletian. They lived in Armenia, where at that time many people believed in Christ and decided not to obey the decrees of the pagan emperor and his officials. All who refused to comply were brutally exterminated. Eustratius, being a military commander, secretly professed Christianity and prayed to the Lord for the salvation of Christians from suffering. He himself wanted to embrace the martyr's feat but felt fear.
In such a state, he instructed his servant to take his belt to the church, place it on the altar, and watch who would take it first. If it was the presbyter Axentius, a pious Christian, the servant was to return and inform Eustratius. This happened, and Eustratius took it as a sign of God's blessing for martyrdom. Soon, Axentius was arrested and thrown into prison. Eustratius delivered him to trial, and when Axentius appeared before the court, he also confessed his faith. They were tortured, but their wounds miraculously healed.
This was witnessed by Eustratius's friend, Eugene, who immediately confessed himself as a Christian, for which he was imprisoned along with Eustratius and Axentius. When they were sent to another city for a higher trial, Mardarius joined them. Later, a soldier guarding the prisoners, Orest, openly declared himself a Christian. Ultimately, many soldiers shouted: “We are the soldiers of our Lord Jesus Christ: do with us what you want!” In the end, all the martyrs were executed.
