More Snow — More Harvest: Tips for Gardeners

Snow is a true treasure for gardeners. In recent years, due to climate change, vegetable crops face a lack of moisture in the soil during the summer. Therefore, it is important to accumulate as much snow as possible on your plot in winter.

Winter plantings of onion sets, garlic, and perennial plants such as marjoram, catnip, rhubarb, and tarragon especially need this. Don’t forget to visit your plot in winter to check how these crops are doing and whether there is enough snow on them.

To retain snow, if it has already fallen on your plot, scatter spruce branches, brushwood, or set up special shields on the beds. After heavy snowfall, don’t forget to shake the snow off fruit trees. For large trees, it is convenient to use poles wrapped in burlap to avoid damaging the bark.

Also, pay attention to the presence of mouse tracks in the snow. If you notice them, compact the snow in those areas to disrupt the mouse tunnels and prevent damage. Sometimes, after thaws, a dense crust forms on the snow — ice, which restricts air flow. It needs to be broken up so that the plants do not suffocate.
