An Extra 2 Hours of Sleep on Weekends Could Save Lives - Study

Scientists from Nanjing Medical University (China) advise those who suffer from chronic sleep deprivation during the workweek to allow themselves to sleep longer on weekends. Their recent study showed that an extra two hours of sleep on the weekend reduces the risk of angina, heart attack, or stroke by 63%.

According to the Daily Mail, researchers reached their conclusions by analyzing data from 3,400 workers. The results showed that those who slept less than six hours a night during the week and did not make up for the lost sleep on weekends had a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

It is well known that nighttime sleep should last from seven to eight hours. This amount is necessary for full physiological recovery of the body.

Sleep plays a key role not only for the brain but also for the cardiovascular system, protecting the heart from the negative effects of daily stress and reducing inflammation levels in the vessels. The new study showed that even if you sleep less than required for health for five nights a week, this damage can be partially compensated by getting extra sleep on weekends.
