Washing a down coat is no easy task, and its proper drying can turn out to be even more challenging.
With the arrival of cold weather, even cotton and synthetic items take a long time to dry on the balcony, not to mention jackets with down filling. However, time is not the only issue. In winter, the dryer has to be moved to a warm room, which leads to a lack of free space and the emergence of an unpleasant musty smell. But is there a way to quickly and effortlessly dry a down jacket at home? Find out below!
Warnings
Before moving on to the tips, let’s recall the main recommendations to consider before drying winter outerwear.
Be sure to check the information on the label. Some manufacturers allow their products to be dried only in a tumble dryer, and not by yourself, but at a dry cleaner.
Never dry down jackets on a radiator. This can damage the material: the down jacket will deform, and the filling inside will clump together.
If your washing machine has a spacious drum and a warm air drying function, you can put the down jacket in there. But first, select the delicate mode.
Do not fold or twist the down jacket during drying.
Do not leave the item with down and feathers in the bathroom. It will not dry due to the high humidity, and in the worst case, it may start to rot.
Hair Dryer
The simplest way to dry a coat with thick insulation is to use a regular hair dryer. Gently wring out the coat, then manually distribute the filling so that it does not clump together during drying. Zip up the down jacket and lay it on a table. Take the hair dryer and direct the stream of warm air through the collar into the garment.
Take a break every three minutes: turn off the device for a while to let it cool down and avoid overheating.
When the material is dry, shake the item, and then break up any remaining clumps of filling using a carpet beater.
Fan
The down jacket will dry faster, and the filling will not settle if you leave it on the dryer in a vertical position.
Move the dryer to the hallway or another well-ventilated room. Set a fan nearby at least 20 cm away. Turn on the device and let it run for at least half an hour. This will significantly speed up the moisture evaporation process.
