I heard that it is not recommended to clean ears with cotton swabs. Why is that? And what can be used instead?
“Ear hygiene procedures involve gently washing the outer ear and the part of the ear canal that is accessible to the finger, provided there is no perforation of the eardrum and no ear diseases,” explains otolaryngologist Anastasia NIDELKO. “The human ear is structured in such a way that during talking or chewing, the lower jaw and the walls of the ear canal move, which helps the natural exit of earwax from the ear.
Ignoring ear hygiene is not advisable, as excessive earwax buildup can lead to the formation of a wax plug. This can manifest as hearing loss, a feeling of fullness, noise, discomfort or pain in the ears, headaches, and even coughing. It is strictly forbidden to remove a wax plug on your own; a specialist should be consulted for this.
Cosmetic swabs, ear candles, folk remedies, and various improvised tools are not intended for cleaning the ear canal, as they can lead to deeper pushing of wax, injuries and inflammations of the ear canal, as well as perforation of the eardrum.”
