Ten Unusual Tips for Drivers During the Winter Period

In winter, driving becomes more challenging: the car can get stuck in the snow, the windows can fog up, and the wipers can freeze. We offer simple tips that will make your trips more comfortable.

To prevent the windshield from fogging up, use shaving cream

There are many ways to prevent the fogging of the windshield (and other) glasses from the inside of the car. However, shaving gel shows the best results.

You don’t need to buy an expensive product for this life hack — just take the cheapest gel, apply it to the glass, spread it evenly, and wipe it thoroughly to avoid streaks. Yes, it may seem strange, but give it a try — you might like it!

Wrap the side mirrors in plastic bags

If your car is often parked outside, you can protect the side mirrors from moisture and icing with this simple trick. Just put small plastic bags over them and secure them with rubber bands.

Use hand sanitizer to unlock a frozen car

On frosty days, car locks can freeze — this can become a real problem, especially when you are in a hurry to work. To prevent your keys from getting stuck in the lock, spray them with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. The alcohol will melt the ice inside the lock.

To prevent the keyhole from freezing, you can spray a little “WD-40” — the well-known lubricant.

Put old socks on the wipers

You probably lift the wipers vertically before leaving the car outside. This is a good way to protect them from sticking to the windshield, but it’s even better to put socks on the wipers. In the morning, just take them off and store them in the glove compartment or trunk — they will come in handy again.

A small mat on the windshield will protect it from snow and ice

If the weather forecast predicts precipitation, or if you live in a region with unpredictable weather, you can cover the windshield with a small mat or tarp for extra protection. This will help prevent snow and ice from accumulating on the glass and make cleaning the car easier.

Also, keep the mat in the trunk — it can be useful in other situations.

Wear socks over your shoes to get a stuck car out

If your car is stuck in the snow and needs to be pushed, put the socks you used for the wipers on your boots. Remember, we put them in the glove compartment or trunk? The fabric will increase traction with the ground or snow, making it easier for you to push the car.

Car mats will help free the car from a snowdrift

You will need the mat or tarp you used for the windshield again. To enhance the effect of the socks on your boots, place the mats under the car's wheels. This will increase traction and speed up the process of freeing the car from the snow.

Lubricate the hinges to make opening the door easier

In cold weather, car doors can be hard to open not only due to a frozen lock but also because of iced hinges. Apply a little oil or lubricant (such as the same “WD-40”) to prevent ice formation.

Cat litter will help avoid fogging of the windows

At the beginning of our list, we already mentioned a useful life hack against fogging windows. Here’s another one — fill some socks with cat litter and place them in the car. They will absorb excess moisture.

Make homemade antifreeze

If you don’t want to spend money on windshield washer fluid, you can make it yourself. Take about 4.5 liters of water, add a tablespoon of dish soap, half a cup of vinegar, and a few drops of blue food coloring. To prevent your mixture from freezing, add one cup of isopropyl alcohol to it.

Important: before pouring the homemade liquid, check its properties — leave the container outside or on a cold balcony to ensure it doesn’t freeze. If it freezes, add more alcohol.
