A Scandinavian life hack has gained popularity on TikTok: hanging blankets and other bed linen in the frost to refresh them and improve sleep quality.
Blogger Cecilia Blomdahl from Svalbard shares that she learned this method from her mother. According to her, moisture evaporates, making the bedding fresher and airier. If there is no suitable place in the yard, one can simply open a window in the house for about an hour.
Science partially supports the effect: at night we lose about a liter of water, which saturates the filling of blankets and pillows. Low temperatures reduce the activity of dust mites, but do not eliminate them — they become active again when it warms up. Sunlight's ultraviolet rays barely penetrate the atmosphere in winter, so their impact is minimal. In summer, however, pollen that gets on the fabric from outside can exacerbate allergic reactions.
Experts note that for a thorough cleaning, bedding should be washed at 45 °C and dried in a machine: this is what kills the mites along with their eggs. Frost is convenient, eco-friendly, and helps remove excess moisture, but it does not replace regular washing.
