Why do apples become glassy and tasteless?

Nailing (glassiness) is a physiological disease that most often manifests in Papirka and Antonovka apples, especially in a damp rainy autumn during the ripening period of apples.

Large glassy areas filled with juice form on the surface of the fruits. Apples become hard, tasteless, and almost inedible.

Apple varieties with green-colored fruits sometimes spoil at the end of storage due to volatile aromatic substances released by the fruits themselves. In this case, the skin of the fruits turns brown and easily separates from the pulp. This disease is called sunburn.

To prevent the infection of apples, each fruit should be wrapped individually in a napkin (paper) soaked in mineral oil (100 g for 500 napkins). To do this, wrap a soft cloth slightly soaked in oil around a regular rolling pin and roll it over the napkins or paper, and then wrap healthy, undamaged apples in them.
