Does it make sense to add sawdust to the soil?

Many gardeners claim that sawdust is a fertilizer.

An experienced gardener, agronomist Alexander Khorobrovets, explains:

  • Many gardeners claim that sawdust is a fertilizer. Using it without treating it with mineral fertilizers is pointless.

The yield may even decrease, as the bacteria decomposing it draw nutrients from the soil. Sawdust is best used for making compost. For this, two and a half kilograms of carbamide - urea, which is first dissolved in water (15 buckets), is added per cubic meter of sawdust.

After moistening with the solution, the pile of sawdust is covered with film and turned over every two weeks. The temperature in the pile rises to 50 degrees Celsius. After one and a half to two months, the sawdust turns black, and it can be used to improve the structure of heavy clay soils.
