Some spices can not only enhance the flavor of dishes but also positively affect your well-being.
Sometimes the simplest solutions can significantly improve life. They do not have to be unpleasant or go against one’s will. Home cooking enthusiasts may be pleased to know that a study from the Longevity Center at the University of California has shown that curcumin strengthens memory and enhances mood.
Curcumin is a compound found in the root of the spice turmeric. American scientists note that its positive qualities are particularly evident in older adults.
Where the Conclusions Come From
Researchers from California conducted a study involving 40 participants aged 51 to 84 who exhibited mild memory problems. Each participant took about 90 milligrams of curcumin twice a day for 18 months.
After completing the therapy, most participants showed a 28% improvement in various cognitive tests. The authors of the study attribute this effect of curcumin to its ability to help the body fight against plaques and tangles in the areas of the brain responsible for memory and mood. Such plaques are often found in Alzheimer's disease.
