Food as a Drug: Which Products Can Cause Addiction

Did you know that your favorite food can cause addiction? From withdrawal symptoms to changes in brain chemistry—our favorite products have surprising ways of making us want them more. Today, we have prepared a list of products that can cause addiction.

CHOCOLATE

Many people call themselves chocoholics, but is it really possible to become addicted to chocolate? The answer is yes. One reason many feel 'addicted' to chocolate is that the chemical compounds found in this product (including theobromine, phenylethylamine, anandamide, and tryptophan) produce pleasure similar to the effects of drugs on the brain. Additionally, chocolate contains alkaloids (tetrahydro-beta-carbolines) that are also present in alcohol and are associated with alcoholism. However, before signing up for an alcoholics anonymous group, it is worth noting that many researchers believe the chemicals in chocolate are also found in other foods that most of us do not crave. There has also been a suggestion that the concentration of these substances in chocolate is insufficient to form an addiction. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that chocolate remains one of the most popular foods in the world—whether due to psychological factors or physical dependence.

CHEESE

Cheese is an integral part of many unhealthy dishes, from pizza to cheeseburgers. Research has shown the presence of opiates, including morphine, in hard cheese. Although its content is too low to cause a permanent addiction, some scientists express concerns about casein (the main protein in cheese), which forms morphine-like compounds—casomorphins—when digested. Furthermore, cheese contains phenylethylamine—a substance with a stimulating effect that enhances the craving for this product.

SUGAR

We all know about the harm sugar can do to health... However, according to numerous studies, it can also cause unhealthy cravings. Research shows that when consuming sugar, the brain releases chemicals called opioids that create a strong feeling of pleasure. This addictive state can occur when the body does not receive sugar.

Psychologists from Princeton University conducted a study on sugar addiction by examining its effects on rats. They found that after introducing a high-sugar diet to the rats, the animals exhibited the same symptoms as those seen during drug withdrawal (including tremors and changes in brain chemistry). Thus, they concluded that sugar can cause strong addiction.

BURGERS AND OTHER MEAT PRODUCTS

Numerous studies confirm that fatty, processed unhealthy foods, such as hamburgers, can cause strong addiction. According to Professor David Kessler, a former member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and author of the book "The End of Overeating," the combination of fat, salt, and sugar in unhealthy food activates our 'pleasure sensation' and makes us want more. Scientists from the Scripps Research Institute in Florida confirmed this theory with an unusual experiment on rats. They found that the animals' brain response to unhealthy food (including fatty meat) was similar to the brain response of drug addicts consuming cocaine and heroin. Additionally, meat, like chocolate, cheese, and sugar, releases opiate-like substances during digestion, which can lead to addiction and dependence on these products.

COFFEE

Many believe they cannot start their day without a cup of coffee and often joke about coffee 'addiction,' but this is not far from the truth. For years, there has been debate about whether caffeine causes addiction. And it is hard to deny that many of us crave it to the extent that headaches and decreased activity occur without this drink...

One reason people crave coffee so much is related to serious symptoms when withdrawing or stopping caffeine—from fatigue and headaches to irritability and depression. However, this is not always a physical dependence. Many simply mistakenly believe they cannot start their day without a morning cup of coffee. Whatever the reason, caffeine remains the most popular food drug in the world and a primary product capable of causing physical and psychological dependence.
