Moldy food may not be immediately noticeable, and in this case, there is a high probability of accidentally consuming it. How dangerous is this?
In an interview, dietitian Elena Tikhomirova answered the question about the consequences of accidentally consuming moldy food. She noted that the consequences depend on two factors: the state of the immune system and the amount of mold ingested.
Tikhomirova explained that for a healthy person with a normally functioning immune system, accidentally consuming a small piece of moldy bread will not be dangerous. The immune response and the aggressive environment of gastric juice will handle the mold.
However, if a significant amount of mold enters the body and the immune system is weakened, this can lead to poisoning by toxins contained in the mold, potentially resulting in serious conditions and even death. The doctor listed symptoms that may occur with mold intoxication:
* nausea and vomiting,
* headache,
* fever.
In addition, Tikhomirova pointed out groups of people with weakened immunity, noting that “these are elderly people, people with obesity, and those suffering from chronic diseases.”
The bodies of such individuals may not cope with digesting the mold.
