"Eat breakfast yourself, share lunch with a friend, and give dinner to an enemy" — this proverb is perceived by many as a dietary recommendation. However, nutritionists disagree. In fact, numerous studies confirm that having dinner 2–3 hours before sleep is extremely important for the health of the body.
Skipping the evening meal can cause a number of problems, which we will discuss further.
One of the main negative consequences of this choice is a lack of essential nutrients. The fact is that even at night, the body needs energy to function properly, including the heart, lungs, brain, and other organs, which cannot be provided by just two meals. Thus, consistently skipping dinner can lead to serious metabolic disorders, insulin issues, and hormonal imbalances.
If a person feels hungry in the evening, it is advisable to satisfy that hunger rather than deny themselves food. The main condition is to avoid fatty meat dishes, pastries, cheese, pasta, fried and high-calorie foods, as well as sauces. Such a dinner will certainly not be beneficial. It is best to choose fresh or stewed vegetables, lean beef, fish, or chicken. Porridge is also a good option.
The second unpleasant consequence of skipping dinner is weight gain. Yes, this may surprise many, but missing dinner does not contribute to weight loss. Scientists have long proven that this viewpoint is a myth, and that due to hunger, the body stops burning fat and starts to actively accumulate it.
Moreover, skipping the evening meal worsens sleep quality. Since hunger is a stressor, the body finds it difficult to relax. As a result, a person may experience insomnia, restless shallow sleep, or nightmares. It is also possible that the feeling of hunger will be so strong that the person wakes up and cannot fall back asleep for a long time. In any case, poor sleep makes a person tired, irritable, and inattentive, which negatively affects various aspects of their life.
