Basic Rules for Storing Food in the Refrigerator

This affects the shelf life of food

The publication Hochu offers recommendations that will help optimally organize space in the refrigerator and thus extend the shelf life of food.

Storing food in the refrigerator is not only a way to protect it from spoilage. Proper distribution of food on the shelves can significantly increase its shelf life and maintain quality. Pixelinform shares several useful tips.

On the top shelf, ready-to-eat foods such as sausages, cheeses, desserts, and leftovers: soups, fish, meat, and salads without dressing are placed. Opened canned goods should also be placed on the top shelf.

Middle Shelf

This shelf is for storing meat and poultry. Although raw meat and poultry should usually be on the bottom shelf, if you have a special compartment for meat, you can use it. Dairy products such as milk, yogurt, kefir, and cottage cheese are also placed on the middle shelves. Eggs are best stored in a special container.

Bottom Shelf

Fresh fruits and vegetables should be placed on the bottom shelf. It is important that they do not touch each other. The same applies to greens: parsley, dill, lettuce, and mushrooms.

Door Shelves

These shelves are for beverages: juices, soft drinks, and water. This is also an ideal place for ready-made sauces, jams, and preserves. Medications that need to be stored in the refrigerator should also be placed on the door shelves.

Regularly clean the refrigerator: this will help prevent the growth of bacteria and unpleasant odors. Using airtight containers will help keep food fresh and prevent the spread of odors.
