Even a daytime cup of coffee can worsen sleep quality if consumed too late. Doctors recommend considering the time between drinking the beverage and going to bed — this interval should be long enough.
According to Dr. S. La Rosa, caffeine can affect the process of falling asleep and the structure of sleep. It can increase the time needed to fall asleep and reduce the duration of deep sleep. Moreover, a person does not always notice this effect.
The specialist explained that there should be at least nine hours between the last cup of coffee and nighttime rest. Therefore, if a person plans to go to bed in the evening, it is better to limit coffee consumption to the first half of the day. As a guideline, the doctor suggested around 2:00 PM for the last cup.
At the same time, much depends on the volume of the drink. If it is a large portion — for example, about 500 milliliters — it is recommended to drink it even earlier.
The expert noted that a similar rule applies to meals. Dinner should ideally be finished at least three hours before sleep. If the meal was substantial, the interval between eating and resting should be even longer.
Previously, cardiologist D. Sokolov warned that coffee can cause an increase in blood pressure. According to him, elderly people, patients with hypertension, and those who rarely consume caffeine should be particularly cautious with this drink.
