The Nutritionist Named 9 'Healthy' Foods That Can Be More Dangerous Than Fast Food

Everyone knows about the dangers of 'fast food': hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, pizza, donuts, soda. However, there are products that can cause even greater harm to health, although many consider them healthy.

Fast food is dangerous due to its high content of calories, fast carbohydrates, saturated fats, excess salt, food additives, carcinogens, and lack of fiber, reports Doctorpiter.

However, there are other foods whose excessive consumption can negatively affect health, although their harm is not as obvious. Such foods were discussed by nutritionist Polina Vasilieva.

1. Fish and Seafood

Seafood is rich in vitamins, macro- and microelements, as well as polyunsaturated fatty acids. However, they can also pose health risks under certain conditions.

“Shrimp and some other seafood are strong allergens that can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rash, Quincke's edema, and even anaphylactic shock,” explains the doctor. “Moreover, seafood can contain parasites, bacteria, and viruses, so proper thermal processing is very important.”

As for fish, due to environmental pollution, it can accumulate significant levels of mercury, lead, and other heavy metals, notes the specialist.

“Fish raised in artificial conditions often contains dyes that give it a bright color. In natural conditions, the flesh of red fish has a light orange hue,” adds Polina Vasilieva.

2. Red Meat

Meat is an important source of complete protein, iron, B vitamins, and other beneficial substances. However, when planning a diet, one should also consider the negative effects of meat on the body.

Meat may contain antibiotics if the animal has recently undergone treatment. Regular consumption of meat with antibiotic residues can negatively affect health, as they suppress beneficial flora in the body, cause allergic reactions, and contribute to the development of resistance in pathogenic bacteria to antibacterial treatment in the future.

An excess of saturated fats and cholesterol can lead to cardiovascular diseases.

Carcinogens, substances that promote the development of cancer, are formed during the thermal processing of meat, for example, when frying or grilling. Such carcinogens include heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). A number of scientific studies indicate a link between the consumption of products containing HAAs and the development of colorectal cancer and other oncological diseases.

“The content of chemical carcinogens can be significantly reduced by avoiding contact of the meat surface with fire, constantly flipping the meat during cooking, using various spices, herbs, and plant extracts (such as lemon juice, black pepper), as well as marinades. During thermal processing, the marinade serves as a barrier, preventing direct contact of the product with the heating surface, and contains organic acids that suppress the formation of HAAs,” emphasizes the doctor.

3. Minced Meat and Processed Meat

Processed meat refers to meat that has undergone appropriate processing for long-term storage—smoking, canning, drying, or salting.

“Processed meats include sausages, salami, ham, smoked meats, and canned meats,” explains Polina Vasilieva. “Studies show that regular consumption of processed meat increases the risk of developing cancer (colorectal cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer), cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and even dementia. It is recommended to minimize the consumption of products in this category.”

Minced meat is not classified as processed meat, but it can also pose health risks as it is a perishable product. Bacteria multiply faster in ground raw meat than on the surface of a whole piece.

“Contamination of minced meat with microorganisms most often occurs on the grinder and cutter (industrial meat grinders, choppers). Therefore, thorough and prolonged thermal processing of minced meat before consumption is very important. It is necessary to wash utensils that have come into contact with minced meat and avoid contact with products that have not undergone thermal processing,” recommends the expert.

4. Baked Potatoes, Toasted Bread, Crackers

When heating starchy foods (potatoes, bread, cereals, pastries) at temperatures of 120 °C and above, a substance called acrylamide is formed.

“Studies have shown that acrylamide negatively affects the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and reproductive system, increasing the risk of developing cancer,” says Polina Vasilieva. “However, it is unknown what amount of acrylamide is safe, so it is best to minimize its consumption from food.”

It is recommended to fry bread and potatoes only until golden brown, as a brown crust indicates a high acrylamide content. All burnt areas should be thoroughly cut off and removed before consumption.

“Starchy foods have a high glycemic index, leading to a sharp increase in blood glucose and insulin levels,” continues the expert. “These products are quickly absorbed, and the feeling of satiety lasts a short time. Fluctuations in blood glucose levels increase the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, as well as worsen lipid profiles and increase the frequency of cardiovascular diseases.”

It is best to consume starchy products in combination with fiber-rich foods, as fiber slows down glucose absorption and prevents sharp fluctuations in blood glucose levels.

5. Sweet Drinks

Many believe that juices or fruit drinks can serve as an alternative to sweet carbonated drinks; however, in terms of sugar and calorie content, they often differ little.

“All sugars, regardless of their source, affect the body in the same way,” explains the doctor. “Moderate doses of sugar are necessary for normal functioning. It is the excess of sugar that is harmful, leading to obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, disruption of the gut microbiota balance, cavities, and other diseases.”

According to statistics, a person consumes on average 10 times more sugar than is necessary for the body's vital functions. Therefore, it is extremely important not to consume sweet drinks on a regular basis. They are a source of sugar and calories that many do not consider when planning their diet.

“The listed products can be included in the diet, as they contain not only harmful substances. The main thing is to maintain balance and eat a variety of foods, which is the key to healthy longevity,” concludes the doctor.
