Does fiber really contribute to improved brain activity in older adults?

There is an opinion that fiber contributes to improved brain activity in older adults...

It is true. Research conducted by scientists from King's College London confirms that plant fiber improves cognitive functions in people over 60 years old. The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Communications.

In a 12-week experiment, 36 pairs of twins showing signs of cognitive decline participated. The pairs were divided for the study: one group received plant fiber supplements, while the other received a placebo. The results showed that participants taking fiber performed better on tests assessing cognitive abilities, including improvements in memory and information processing speed. Scientists suggest that this is related to the improvement of gut microbiota composition in the first group, as the gut directly interacts with the brain through a specialized neural pathway.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

According to nutritionist Elena AFONINA, black beans, Brussels sprouts, avocados, sweet potatoes, pears, turnips, figs, apricots, and flaxseeds are particularly rich in fiber.
