Which foods can slow down intoxication?

Can the process of intoxication be slowed down with food?

“Yes, it is possible. One should choose foods that consist of proteins, fats, and complex carbohydrates, which slow down the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream,” says first-category therapist Violetta SAVKOVA.

  • “For example, eat meat or fish with a side of grains or potatoes and a large portion of salad dressed with oil. A hearty meal slows down gastric emptying, and if food stays in the stomach longer, alcohol takes longer to reach the small intestine—meaning intoxication occurs later. Fiber, which is abundant in sauerkraut, also significantly slows down alcohol absorption into the blood. Additionally, citrus fruits quickly neutralize the effects of alcohol: drizzle your dish with lemon juice or eat a lemon (lime, grapefruit, orange).

Consuming alcohol leads to dehydration, so it is advisable to drink a glass of plain water (about 200 ml) after each glass of alcohol. This will help lower the alcohol level in the blood and reduce the degree of intoxication.”
