It is rare for a leader in Latvia in recent days not to have made calming speeches. Why now?

Here is a brief selection of quotes from speeches related to the danger/safety of living in the Republic of Latvia:

– Latvia is currently safe, and the level of direct military threat is low – Prime Minister Evika Silina at foreign policy debates in the Saeima, January 29.

– In the coming years, Russia is unlikely to pose a military threat to NATO – Commander of the National Armed Forces of Latvia Kaspars Pudans in an interview with LETA, January 28.

– There is currently no direct military threat to Latvia from Russia – report from the Bureau for the Protection of the Satversme, January 27.

At this moment, we have no signs of an imminent Russian attack – President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs in an interview with Blick, January 25.

Why has there suddenly been a flood of conciliatory statements directed at us? Each individual speech is not surprising. But a staged chorus of repeating mantras about a peaceful Russia, especially from the Latvian establishment – that is strange.

Are they trying not to provoke Trump, who sees Putin as a quite handshakeable partner?

Or are they preparing for post-war coexistence with a neighbor who is not going anywhere? It is certainly better to maintain a shaky peace than to poke it with a stick every day, trying to irritate it even more.

Or perhaps they sensed a weakening of the unity of allied forces? It is one thing to expose Putin and his army when American Abrams tanks are growling behind your back in Adazi. It is another thing when there are no tanks.

Or maybe they are trying to calm foreign investors, who, having listened to the alarmist statements of the local elite and read local portals, are grabbing their suitcases with million-dollar investments and fleeing to other countries where they do not expect war at any moment?

Or perhaps surveys of public sentiment have shown that ordinary citizens are exhausted by the persistent fear? Consequently, they work worse, pay fewer taxes, and at the first opportunity, they try to retreat further to the West?

It is unclear.
