How to Properly Store Fish to Avoid Unpleasant Odors in the Refrigerator

Keeping fish fresh and preventing odors in the refrigerator is possible thanks to several proven methods.

You should take care of the freshness of the fish in advance. Before heading to the store or market, bring a sealed bag to help keep the products cool during the trip.

“If you plan to cook the fish not on the same day, take a sealed food bag with you or ask to pack the fish with ice,” advises chef John Burrows. This simple trick will help keep the fish fresh on the way home.

Upon returning home, place the fresh fish in a container with ice and put it in the refrigerator. This way, it will stay cold enough for several hours, and you won’t have to freeze it.

For storing fish with ice, it’s best to use a colander and a large bowl to collect the water. The bowl will serve as a tray, and the fish will remain fresh without absorbing excess water that forms when the ice melts. Remember to periodically replace the ice.

How to avoid fish odors in the refrigerator? This task is quite simple. Just tightly wrap the fish in cooking paper or place it in a plastic container to prevent the smell from spreading to other products.

Another tip is to store raw fish separately from other products, especially ready-to-eat ones. Raw fish may contain pathogenic microorganisms, which helps prevent contamination of other products with harmful bacteria.

And most importantly, raw fish should be used within one to two days. If you can’t cook it in time, it’s better to freeze it. Place the fish deep in the freezer to ensure a stable temperature and extend its shelf life. Fish can be stored in the freezer for no longer than eight months.
