Nausea and Vomiting: Nestle Recalls Baby Food Products Across Europe

Nestle recalls some batches of its key baby food products, including SMA, BEBA, and NAN, across Europe due to potential contamination with toxins that can cause nausea and vomiting. This was reported by Reuters.

Nestle has recalled batches of its SMA, BEBA, and NAN products in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, and Britain, warning of the possible presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by certain strains of the Bacillus cereus bacteria.

The toxin "is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by boiling, using hot water, or preparing baby milk," stated the UK Food Standards Agency. When consumed, it can lead to the rapid onset of symptoms including nausea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps.

The product recall, which began on a smaller scale in December, is yet another challenge for Nestle's new CEO Philippe Navratil, who is trying to stimulate the company's growth by revising its product portfolio following a period of management upheaval.

According to the analytics firm SkyQuest Technology Group, Nestle holds nearly a quarter of the global baby food market, which is valued at $92.2 billion.

The company does not publish specific sales figures, but baby food is part of the Nutrition and Health Science division, which accounted for 16.6% of the Swiss company's total sales in 2024, amounting to $115.35 billion.
